I started Gordonswaby.com ( June 2006) a couple months after Kirk Brown, the author of the blog, Jamaipanese.com ( February 2006) started his. I met him through blogging and have known him for about 6 years.

The word “Jamaipanese” is a portmanteau; a combination of Jamaica and Japan. Kirk is a Jamaica ( He’s Jamaican) and Japan ( more so Japan) enthusiast, he’s been an enthusiast of the latter for a while, but didn’t get to visit the country until recently–that’s the interesting part.

Kirk had everything he needed to go to Japan, but money. But that wasn’t going to deter him from going. Most people wouldn’t have bothered, but Kirk did and I admire him for that. His story is interesting and I think it should be highlighted.

On January 18, 2010 Kirk wrote a detailed blog post explaining how he’d acquire the funds to go to Japan, where he’d stay and what his expenses would be. You can read the blog post here. It’s titled “Operation Visit Japan”. What I find particularly interesting is how he managed to raise about 40% of the funds through his blog via donations (I’m pretty sure many told him not to bother because people would not donate, but he did anyway). I donated and encouraged him as I’m sure many others did. As a result he received over $1,000 USD in donations from people all over the world. This is an example of how useful the internet can be to anyone, wherever you are, it just takes effort and dedication.

Kirk even managed to snag sponsorship from a Japanese company for wireless internet connectivity while he was there and even stayed with a Japanese reggae singer who he met through his blog. There is still much more to be told, but I definitely can’t tell it like he can. He has organized all his posts re: his trip to Japan he in a category that you can read here

Kirk is a good writer, consistent blogger and a great friend. I’m very happy for him and I’m glad he finally got the opportunity to visit a place he’s so crazy about.

Ode to Jamaipanese.com, my blog of the year!

A lot of great speakers were at TEDxJamaica, but my favorite speakers were Barrington Irving and Randall Pinket. Particularly Pinkett’s talk because it touched on something I wrote about almost 2 months ago on my tumblr blog.

The title of the post was “Risk Aversion”

I’ve found that for the most part, the older you get the more risk averse you become. It’s probably caused by awareness, realities of the world, obligations or even maturity[?].

Back when Advance-Gamers.com (Article) was in its prime I contacted many well known video game publishers because I wanted to review their games…well I primarily just wanted to play them. But hey, I didn’t think about it much, I just sent out emails. Imagine, a 15 year old with bad English emailing PR at some of the largest gaming publishers in America.

Well, it worked, I got a ton load of games sent to me for review ( I also got to keep them) and made some good contacts in the industry. I didn’t think much about what I was doing then…heck, I didn’t think, I just did. But, now I’m older and more self-conscious. At 20 I would think long hard about sending out those emails. What if they don’t respond? What if they say no, what if they say my website is too small or not popular enough?

Release your inhibitions.

If you can…do it while you’re young. Whatever “it” is.

You can watch Dr.Randall Pinket’s talk here. The other talks are here

Earlier today I made this tweet, “ I’m not sure if some people realize that the Government includes both the PNP and the JLP and not just the latter.”.

An official Diplomat of Jamaica subsequently responded to this tweet disagreeing with me. You would think that an official representative of our country would know this, but alas. I will not include the name or twitter handle of this diplomat, if only for his sake.

If you’re not familiar with the structure of the Jamaican Government please go here, here or here.

Feel free to follow me on twitter: @gordonswaby

N.B His name is replaced with “Guy” in the discussion:

Gordonswaby:I’m not sure if some people realize that the Government includes both the PNP and the JLP and not just the latter.Guy:Huh?!Gordon: ?

Guy: When somegood happens who gets the credit…?

Gordon: Whoever is the ruling party at the time. Right now it’s the JLP so they get the credit.

Guy: exactly the minority have no real control over the decision making.. This system very centralized

Gordon: That was not the premise of my tweet. The fact still remains that both parties make up the government.

Guy: they do not.. They make up the legislature.. One party forms government…its basically about who makes final decisions

Gordon: I’m not talking about who has the power and who doesn’t. Obviously the ruling party has the power. That’s why they’re the RULING party. I’m not disputing that. But the Government of Jamaica consists of BOTH parties.

Guy : the vast majority of decisions like money matters are taken by simple majority vote…

Gordon: You’re digressing.

Guy : Jamaica has had one party in parliament already.. The oppositions absence was not felt

Guy : a think u have it wrong– the parliament while having the highest authority is not the government —

Gordon: I never said that Parliament was the government. I said they make up the government.

Gordon: Here’s some reading for you: http://bit.ly/qh18Uw You can go and read the constitution after too.

Guy : u know all that.. But it no other country can any minority party consider themselves part of a govt unless there us a coalition

Guy :the british labour party would tell u that…

Guy : u said both parties make up the govt.. And they dont

Gordon: Give me your definition of the government.

Guy : Those who formulate policy, make decisions and execute

Gordon: So tell me, What does the Upper House and Lower house fall under? What is it apart of?

Guy : the upper house only deliberate and recommend but can be ignored

Guy : still parliament — but only the lower house can approve things relating to money– hence the power–

Gordon: And what does parliament fall under? It doesn’t fall under anything?

Guy : no it’s the legislature from which the govt is drawn—

Gordon: And it’s a legislature which operates under a parliamentary system of the GOVERNMENT.

Guy : basically when u refer to the govt. U can’t refer to the opposition

Guy : opposition and govt have two different role.. The former supposed to be a check on the latter

Gordon: And to do that they have to have a seat in parliament. Parliament is apart of the Government.

Gordon: Not according to the Jamaican constitution. Unless there’s some change that I don’t know about.

Guy : govt is drawn from The legislature.. U can’t oversimplify it..

Gordon: Bruce Golding is the PM of Jamaica because his party has more seats in the government

Gordon:The government pays the leader of the opposition because they have seats in parliament.

Guy : All MPs are paid

Guy : suppose u had 6 or 7 parties is parliament /- all of them would be considered govt.

Gordon:No dude, They wouldn’t be parties in parliament unless they have a seat. There are 60 constituencies in Jamaica

Guy: the MPs are not govt employees sonirsca simplification to say govt pays them

Guy : suppose yu have a 28-5-5-6-4 split in parliament after an election — what then

Gordon: The 28 would be the ruling party.

Gordon: But anyway, I’m done. You’ve apparently formed your own definition of what the government is ignoring what’s written in the constitution in the process.

Guy : and the rest opposition /- the second largest faction would be leader of opposition

Guy : the constitution very clear on the roles of legislature and govt.

Gordon: Oye, Guy , Go read this: http://bit.ly/qtagfpHigh School knowledge. It’s the structure of the GOVERNMENT.

Guy : that’s broken down for high school students — very very simplified –

Gordon: Wow. Dude, simplified doesn’t mean wrong.

Gordon: Ok, let me try again. This time it’s from the Constitution. The STRUCTURE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF JAMAICA: http://bit.ly/qtagfp

Gordon: You have diplomat in your twitter bio and you don’t know that the PNP is apart of the Jamaican government…SAD.

Guy : cause they not

Guy : it say the government can only exist if it has the support of the majority of MPs.If they all in it why would u need a majority

Guy : it nuh wrong it misleading and would give a wrong impression especially when relations between both sides get fraught

Though many (hint: Stunner) found it hard to “integrate” themselves back into so-called real life, it was inevitable ; now it’s no longer euphoria, but instead, nostalgia; nostalgic about experiencing such an amazing meet up and becoming acquainted with so many cool people.

This post’s original purpose was supposed to be an ode to my dear mother, as she’s celebrating her birthday on the 10th of December, but then I thought, why not an ode to them both? I’m sure Mother dearest doesn’t mind sharing the love. So let’s start the with Matriarch shall we:

An ode to my Mother:

Taking care of yourself is very hard, I started to realize that fact after moving to Kingston; after finally figuring that out, I think I started to appreciate you and your role as a Mother more. Being a successful entrepreneur, a fearless mother and a model wife, well that’s something…not something many women can pull off. How you manage to raise three children is beyond me, especially me; I know fully well that I am more than a handful to raise. You’re a Queen among women Mom and I love you.

An ode to my Father:

Dear ol’ Dad, if you were not a stubborn man you would have probably given up on me, but you didn’t and as a result you had me saying “I hate you” a lot growing up, but you knew better. I never took school seriously, I remember the teachers always writing on my report: “Gordon has potential” that’s teacher euphemism for “There’s no hope for this guy”.

I recall constantly getting into fights and you always bailing me out, I also remember you always taking those knives that I felt the need to buy and walk around with, which could have possibly landed me into bigger problems. I could go on and on about the great deal of headaches I caused you, but alas! Without you I would have been a totally different person in a totally different place, or maybe even dead.

Thank you for guiding me through my rebellious childhood phase Daddy, love you!

Everything I am, and everything I will become I owe to my parents, they complement each other and they complete me. They were brought together for a reason, because no one person could handle raising me.

There’s rural Jamaica and then there’s urban Jamaica. Jamaica has 2 cities ( Or is it 3 now? Hello Portmore). Fortunately for me, i was not born in Urban Jamaica. I’m from the “country” as most people have a penchant for calling it.

I am grateful that my parents decided to live and work in rural Jamaica because through that I’ve experienced things city dwellers don’t usually get the opportunity to experience. On the 18th of November i would have completed the teenage leg of my life and though I’m not extremely happy with my accomplishments thus far, i am content and I’m working hard to see my goals through. Now, growing up in the country was a wonderful experience for me ( Christiana, Jamaica), and i never really appreciated it until i moved to Kingston, though that’s a given as you’ll never feel nostalgic about something until you don’t have it anymore. There was barely any crime (apart from the occasional larceny), plenty of yard space ( and i mean acres), and an overabundance of food and a pretty big house to grow up in.

Life in the city is a far cry from what life is like in the country…I’m not sure if I’m the only one who finds it weird for a child to grow up on an apartment complex ( I wonder what that does to them, but i guess it doesn’t bother them because that’s the norm). It’s not often that you find people my age leaving Urban Jamaica and going to rural Jamaica seeking opportunities or for schooling. I remember coming into Kingston with my dad as a youngster for whatever reason; for me everywhere felt like one big maze then ( and in some ways it sort of still does).

There’s absolutely nothing like the “Country come a town” experience, it has helped me to grow and everyday i learn more. If you think about it though, many never have that opportunity. For them, everything happens in the city–you’re born in the city, you grow up in the city, you go to school in the city and for many they end up living and working in the city post school life. Most of which happens while living with their next of kin. Post secondary school life is a different ball game for rural dwellers though; it’s where you leave the comfort of home in the country and move to the city to persue tertiary levels studies. That’s what I’m really happy for. I was forced to grow, think, be responsible and inevitably expedite the process of me becoming a man.

I’ll never forget the first night living on my own…It was now my responsibility to cook ( cooking was second nature to me as i was always in the kitchen with my mother honing my culinary skills), clean, wash, find my way to school and everything else in between. Now imagine a privileged country boy who did not know life without a helper in it moving to Kingston with the responsibility of taking care of himself full-time? ( scary thought). The first day out the door was the worst for me as i had no idea how to find school or how to use the transportation system in Kingston, but thankfully i asked around and figured it out. Now contrast that to a first year student starting University like me that day but has lived in Kingston all his/her life? Only difference for them is the exciting opportunities that university presents.

Fast forward a year later I’m in my second year of University, I’m no longer on foot, I’m more acquainted with the city, I’ve grown both physically and mentally, I’m more mature, I’ve acquired new skills, I’m (still) young, I’m ambitious and I’m ready to take on the world.

If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away-Matthew 5:30.

Now, i have my reservations about the Bible, but that one verse was pretty potent. My Blackberry was my right hand and it was causing me great pain ( Way to take the Lord’s word literally eh?) . Crappy battery life, non functional keys, and a plethora of other issues. Now, I can’t recall it leaving my hand and making contact with the wall, but it happened and it happened fast, Jesus guided my hand maybe?

Make no mistake i love(ed) my blackberry. It made me a little more productive, but also caused me to be a little less productive. Even though it’s sitting in a garbage bin nearby i will miss it dearly and have already started to miss it. I’ve been hearing Blackberry Messenger notifications all day and I’ve been seeing flashing LED lights on things that aren’t supposed to be flashing (like my macbook…call me crazy). I’ve also been reaching for it to make phone calls only to realize it’s not there ( not to mention I’m without a mobile phone now).

But that’s fine, life is all about change and sometimes we become so caught up with vanity that we forget to pay attention to the finer things in life. Maybe I’ll pay more attention in my lectures and actually listen to my friends when they’re speaking to me. If i could, i would do it again. Make no mistake i value my gadgets, but if any of them ( even my macbook) start causing me great distress then I’ll smash it too.

Financially, I’m not in a position to buy a new smartphone, but that’s cool. This smartphone sabbatical will be good for me, it will also give me some time to actually think about my next smartphone purchase. Whether it be an android, an iPhone or even another Blackberry.

The only reason this post has this title is because i had it in my drafts and i couldn’t be bothered to change it. Let’s say if i didn’t start writing this post already while fully knowing about the hell I’d have to go through this morning; the title may have been “Digicel’s Failed 4G Launch”, but anyway; i digress. Initially, the sign up process for Digicel’s Broadband internet service seemed easy ( or so they claimed). According to the message on the website all i needed to do was fill out the relevant information on the website and their sales agent would contact me with relevant information regarding the “delivery” of my modem; delivery in quotes because they don’t actually deliver the modem ( which is misleading) you actually have to pick it up at one of their retail locations. So a couple hours elapse and no call from any Digicel sales agent ( i was expecting a call in an hour or 2).

At about 9:00 AM this morning i got a call from a Digicel sales agent; she was pleasant, thanking me for signing up etc. She confirmed the information i submitted via their website and told me where i could pick up my modem. Because i signed up online i was eligible for a limited edition gift, she told me i had the choice between a USB Pen or a wireless mouse. I went to the 2 locations closest to me only to find out that they were not yet set up to sell the devices. You would think that a company would have all this sorted out before they decide to launch the product (Obviously the sales agent who i spoke to had no idea that these locations were either not stocked or ready to sell the devices), but alas. I decided to check out the other retail locations in my region on their website by calling them instead of wasting my time to check each location individually only to find out that most were not stocked, and one dealer had no idea what i was talking about, mind you this is a retailer listed ON the Digicel website.

I visited the only location selling the device and after battling with them initially (the wait and other minor annoyances) they finally started giving me some attention. Now i realized that signing up online was useless because 1. They didn’t know that i signed up online and also had no idea that you could and 2. They did not know that i was eligible for a gift and other incentives if i did sign up online even though it is clearly stated on the website.

I told her i would return for my gift in a few days ( She did not deny me the gift, but was honest and said she knew nothing about it, she claimed they have not been trained yet and would be attending a training seminar soon). Not to lay the blame squarely at her feet–i blame Digicel for not training their employees prior to launch…

The Process

To purchase the Digicel 4G Modem you need 2 recent utility bills and some sort of identification ( Driver’s License, Voters ID etc if not you need a letter that is signed and stamped by a JP). They will make copies of these. After purchasing the modem they will test it to ensure it’s in full working order by connecting it to a laptop and check for a connection. Once a connection has been established they will direct the browser to the Digicel 4G website where registration of the device is done. You’ll also choose the username and password for your self-care login

Payment Options

Payment for Modems ( You have a choice of a 2. The CPE Wifi Modem (Less Portable) or the USB Dongle Modem ( more portable)) comes in 2 flavors, prepaid and post paid. With prepaid you have the option of paying for 7, 14 or 30 days while with postpaid you pay for 30 days.

I chose the postpaid plan which requires a deposit of $3,000 (Which is all you need to pay, because the modem is free with the postpaid plan) which you get back at the end of the 1 year contract. The first month is free, after which as seen in the image above you pay $2,500 monthly ( 30 day cycle)

Speed

Speed i imagine depends greatly on signal strength, which is measured from 1 to 3).

- The signal is on, but the reception is poor. <- Which i got.

- The signal strength is in the range between 16 and 24 – Good reception

- The signal strength is greater than or equal to 25 dBm – Excellent Reception

The reception can also be checked from your Web Configurator page. Wifi can also be turned on from your web config page; this is explained in depth in the Quick Start Guide that you receive with your modem.

Conclusion

Digicel has a plan, and i may have had a bad experience acquiring my service, but it will inevitably get better. They will soon be offering Laptops with their plans which is good. And for the people that may have a hard time paying for it Digicel has partnered with NCB in offering loans up to $150,000. Not only is this beneficial to Digicel, it is beneficial to Jamaica and will aid in propelling our nation into the future; there’s nothing like access to knowledge and the internet provides that. Prices will also be competitive because they have other networks to contend with ( LIME, Claro and Flow)

If you have any question please feel free to leave a comment.

Like all problems this one has its roots. This one in particular originated from various Examination Depots across the island where corruption is rife and illegal purchasing of a driver’s license is a common occurrence.

You put an unqualified and incompetent driver around the wheel who is also illiterate hence not being able to comprehend the road code book what do you expect the outcome to be ( I guess it’s apparent by now)?

It would serve Jamaica well to take a page from New York’s former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s book and apply the “Broken windows theory” to Jamaica where said mayor had a so called “zero tolerance” policy. This “zero tolerance” policy was part of an interlocking set of wider reforms to be undertaken. According to Wikipedia:

“Giuliani had the police more strictly enforce the law against subway fare evasion, public drinking, urination, and the “squeegee men” who had been wiping windshields of stopped cars and demanding payment. According to the 2001 study of crime trends in New York by George Kelling and William Sousa, rates of both petty and serious crime fell suddenly and significantly, and continued to drop for the following ten years.”

Jamaica’s culture is one of indiscipline and lawlessness. A situation where people are selling illegal DVD’s for argument’s sake is generally not frowned upon because “man a do him hustlin” “. Indeed prosecuting a man for something as “simple” as selling a DVD may seem trivial, but you have to understand that lawlessness has to stop somewhere and if a man cannot respect the small laws, he’ll have no respect for the large ones. Don’t turn a blind eye to small offenses in our country because by doing so you inadvertently encourage the violation of larger ones; always remember; a ruthless killer was once an innocent child.
