Christmas…Not What It Used To Be

No one seems to be talking about it, but it’s the truth, Back in the day when i was a young chap I used to see almost every house with Christmas lights , but in recent times that does not seem to be the case. Only a select few have lights, Has Jamaica lost the Christmas Spirit we once had?, have we become a sad nation? Nowadays Christmas isn’t about Christ, it’s all commercial, it’s all about the money, And i don’t necessarily think turning Christmas into something commercial was the best idea ever.

I guess the Grinch is one happy fellow now. Wikipedia defines Christmas as :

“Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. It refers both to the day celebrating the birth, as well as to the season which that day inaugurates, which concludes with the Feast of the Epiphany. The date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. ”

Ask yourself this, is this what happens on Christmas?. As far as i can see Christmas is a Marketing Ploy, it is now very very very heavily Commercialized, all the companies are out to make a big buck. Oh well, Bye Bye Christmas, welcome Commercemas.

Turns out the Grinch won after all. I didn’t have enough Christmas spirit to buy any presents.

    Christmas is all about commercialism!!!

i agree with what you said about Jamaicans not having the “christmas spirit” anymore, but come on yeah, yeah it’s about christ an all but think of the bussiness places not having enough customers through out the year and christmas being the only time to get them. They have to sieze the moment…. as the saying goes “money makes the world go around”!

Jus to add…maybe the reason why there are not much christmas lights anymore is because people are busy doing more important stuff than putting up some lights…everybody knows it’s christmas don’t have to put up light to show that.

So people’s mentality of Christmas has changed over say what 2-3 years. It was ok for them 2 put up Christmas lights a couple years back, but all of a sudden they realized that it makes no sense anymore? What caused this change in thinking?, it’s also alright for them to spend money on items that are most expensive this time of year, isn’t that a ‘waste of time’? Why not get rid of that, Christmas lights are a representation of Christmas, i don’t really know the significance of them, but i know this much, it gives you that special feeling of christmas, people are too engrossed with making money, Money does not always make people happy, there’s also the saying that “Money is the root of all evil”

yup things have changed and…. they will continue to. What caused this change in thinking you may ask… well what caused us to stop dressing the way we did some years back or what caused us to stop hunting for food as we did around 18,000 years ago? Yes i agree it kinda is a waste of time, some things do get expensive but some don’t they actually lower the cost of some stuff and “sales” are more evident this time of year. Christmas lights gives us a “Special feeling”. Ok…. now…. you are dreaming…… WAKE UP!! Do we even bother to think of the feelings christmas lights can give us as i said we are too busy to be thinking of that.Money is what makes this world go around…..Where would you be if you had none?!?!
